Thank you to our local Sooke Dance Studio for performing for us on Friday. We were once again amazed to be entertained by the talents of the children in our community.

Monday

Shamrock-o-grams on sales all week. For only fifty cents you can buy a friendship note and chocolate for a friend. Shamrock-o-grams are sold in the foyer at lunch and will be delivered on Friday.

Tuesday

Celebration – today at lunch there will be a pizza party for all students who played on either the Jr. Boys’ or Jr. Girls’ volleyball teams this season. Listen to announcements for location.

Field Trip – today Ms. Stannard’s class is busy releasing the salmon fry they have been incubating into DeMamiel Creek, visiting Jack Brooks Fish Hatchery, and Saltwest Company.

Hockey Academy – today is the last day for Hockey Academy. Students interested in next year’s program need to sign up online (go to link on our webpage).

Volleyball Finale – The gloves are off and the knee pads are on! The Jr. Boys play the Jr. Girls today at lunch. Immediately after this game the Sr. Girls and Boys take on the Staff match up! Parents are welcome to cheer on the students!

Thursday

Lahal (Bone Game) Tournament – today all Grade 7 students will have the opportunity to learn and play the historical First Nations game of Lahal from 1-3 in our gym. Spectators are welcome to attend.

Field Trip – Mr. Constable, Mr. Donegani & Ms. St. Jean’s classes are going skating today at SEAPARC 1:15-2:30 pm. Bring or rent your skates. The $2 cost of admission covers rentals if you need them.

Yes-2-Know Today. Our first annual Youth Empowerment Summit was a huge success and none of this would be possible without the organizational skills of Mme. Abell and Ms. Bridal, the dedication of Corporal Scott Hilderley and Teresa Hilderley, generous financial support of our PAC, Municipality of Sooke, YAG Grant (thank you to student super-grant writer Cassidy C.) Merci to our local volunteers who ran Spark Zone events: SEAPARC, Sooke Fall Fair and EMCS Leadership students.

Thank you to the students/families for supporting our Scholastic Book Fair. Our next one is in June.

Congratulations to our Junior Boys’ Volleyball Team who finished off their successful season on Thursday at Monterey Middle school. Strong leadership skills from the grade seven boys combined with the strength of the grade six boys was the key to their success as a team. We are proud of how they represented the Journey Spirit by: accepting the challenge, playing and having fun and reaching for the stars (with some really good blocks)!

Field Trip – Ms. Syme & Mr. Dunbar’s classes are traveling by school bus to watch an IMAX film and watch and listen to how our elected officials run our province at the Legislature during question period today.

Tuesday

Grade 6 Astronomy Event – tonight at 7:30 pm Sid Sidhu and other volunteers from the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada (School Telescope Program) will host a night sky viewing at Journey Middle School. This is weather dependent, and we will have to decide at noon today whether we will be able to see the night sky and hold this event. This is open to grade 6 classes only and because of limited volunteers and telescopes students must sign up ahead of time. Parents and/or guardians must accompany their child to this event. Forms must be handed in to your child’s classroom teacher. Child Minding will be available for younger siblings inside the school. Presentation – Today Ms. Maragh & Ms. Kilpatrick’s classes will be part of an Ocean Networks Canada presentation. Especially fitting considering we live on an island in the Pacific Ocean.

Performance – Sooke Dance Co. will perform for the whole school this afternoon. We are especially proud of the students from Journey who are part of this display of local talent!

Concert Band Practice – In preparation for the regionals there will be a rehearsal for Grade 7 and 8 students 7:30-8:30 a.m. in the Band Room AND Lower brass sectional practice 12:00-1:00 p.m. in the Band Room for grade 7 and 8.

Journey Musical Theater auditions for actors start today @ lunch in the library. Students interested in acting in this year’s musical performance need to attend the first day of auditions today. Dancers will be called at a later date.

Girls’ Rugby Information Meeting – students interested in playing rugby this year for our Dragon Rugby team, please meet in Mrs. Bridal’s room @ lunch.

Whole school assembly in the morning with guest speaker, Michael Bortolotto 9-10 a.m. Events all day for grade 8 students and whole school assembly at the end of the day with guest speaker, Gary Anaka – “the Brain Coach” 1:50 – 2:50 p.m. Thank you to Corporal Scott Hilderley for working with our Student Council to organize the event and to our PAC for sponsoring the guest speakers, Spark Zone Events, and pizza for all grade eight students.

Jr. Boys’ Volleyball jamboree@ St. Joseph’s 3:45pm. Parent/guardian drivers are to meet players in the Journey foyer at 2:20pm on Thursday. Players will need to leave their exploratory early to join their rides. Go Dragons!

Masquerade ‘Snow’ Ball – tonight from 6:30 – 8:30 pm. Doors open precisely at 6:30 pm. Tickets will not be available at the door and students must attend school today if they intend on coming to the dance. Parent support is needed for selling food, glow sticks and for set up. Please leave your name at the office or with a member of the PAC if you can help.

Carnival – Celebrate an important part of our Canadian Culture! 

9:00 – 10:00 – Staff vs Students Journey Hockey Game at Seaparc – attend and support our academy and fearless coach, Ross as he takes on former students now at EMCS.  No other carnival events are to run during this time.

10:15 – 12:00

Students and staff come back during recess and teachers assemble at their event. A “Guest book” sheet is at all events.  Students will circulate as they wish during this time.  We challenge students to sign as many guest books as possible as incentive to participate in as many events as possible. You can even take a selfie with Bon Homme!

Lunch – students will have the opportunity earlier in the week to sign up for the option to have poutine or fries for $5 from a local Food Truck.  Forms must be turned into the office, and all pre-orders are guaranteed their order. Students will eat lunch in their classrooms as usual.

Last Block – Neighbourhood/class Floats will assemble in the bus lane at 1:15 to have our parade down to Poirier. Winning floats will be announced at the end of the day!

Remembrance Day Awards – Congratulations to Teagan L., Mindalynn F., Cameron G., Emma H., Lily S., Jade B., Samantha O., Esther M., Nadia S. for their outstanding work. Thank you to local veteran, Mr. Ron Gulmans and his wife, Mrs. Doris Gulmans for presenting the recognition certificates and cash prizes to our students.

Career Cruising – Grade 8 students will begin choosing courses for next year. EMCS councellors will come to Journey to provide information to us. Students must have a Career Cruising permission for completed before they can register for courses. These were part of the package of forms sent home at the beginning of the year. You will receive an email if we have NOT received your child’s form.

Masquerade Ball – Our next dance is Thursday, February 16 and we need parent support for selling food, glow sticks and for set up. Please leave your name at the office or with a member of the PAC if you can help.

Registration for Late French Immersion continues at Journey. Students currently in grade 5 can register online for next year. The minimum number is 18 students and we are getting closer to having that number!

It’s Volleyball season at Journey – As you can see from our schedule below! We also have open volleyball at lunch for all students. Come out and play volleyball at lunchtime. The days announced each morning so listen carefully! Thanks to all our coaches.
