Makerspace Workshop for Grades 8 & 9

Dream It! Design It! Make It! Join the team from the University of Victoria’s Science Venture and Actua Canada’s MakerMobile as we celebrate the plans for Sooke Makerspace at Edward Milne Community School with a fun-filled Maker workshop for students in Grades 8 & 9. A chance to make, create and innovate at this two-hour after school workshop. Participants will learn the fundamentals of digital design to create two dimensional structures using a computer and laser cutter. Designs will vary in complexity from simple name tags to intricate 3D sculptures that celebrate Canadian inventions. Everyone will take home an artistic rendering of themselves, a past innovation, and a self-made innovation.

Tyee Aquatic Club is looking to expand at SEAPARC: Transition to Tyee (T2T)! Come to our FREE trial for this program Tuesday, December 20th from 3:15- 4:00.

The goal for this new group is to accommodate swimmers ages 8-15 who have skills above the level of the Sharks program, but not quite up to the skill level or endurance of our current Tyee program. Swimmers do not have to have had experience with the Sharks program, but they do need to have certain skills (swimming a 1 km practice (40 lengths), and knowing the basics of all four strokes. Usual practice times will be Tuesday and Thursday 3:30-4:30. Contact Coach Marissa at marissanadin@gmail.com for more information.

Journey is open and buses are running.

As always, it is up to parents as to whether or not they feel conditions are safe enough to send their children to school in.

Thank you/Merci/Hych’ka to the Brooks Family at Brooks Christmas Tree Farm for supplying our 33’ fir tree again this year! Come in and check it out. It actually touches the top of the ceiling in the foyer and smells incredible. It was quite a sight on Friday as staff and students accepted the challenge and raised the massive beauty. Students and staff will decorate it over the week.

It’s Spirit Week at Journey – each day has something happening. Thanks to our Student Council for helping us play and have fun!

Let it snow? We had 36% of our students attend school on Friday mainly because of the first snowfall of the season. With more inclement weather forecast for this week we will try and keep you as updated as possible about school closures. Listen to CFAX (AM 1070) or check Journey or SD62 website (we had some difficulty logging on to ours on Friday). As always, parents make the final decision about sending children to school even when the school has been declared open. Please remember to contact the school if you are having someone other than you, or your emergency contacts, pick up your child during school hours.

Monday

Each day an item will be announced on the PA and each class has the chance to win extra food for their division. We are helping the Food Bank by investing in people right here in our wonderful community and all items are gratefully accepted. Items they are especially looking for this year are: baking goods (chocolate chips/raisons, flour, baking powder etc.); spices; granola bars and fruit cups; and jam/marmalade/honey.

Students can purchase 5 tickets for $1. Every ticket with a 7 in the number will win a corresponding prize. Tickets without 7s will win a smaller prize. There are over 500 big prizes to be won!

Great Milne’s Landing Food Fight – also begins today and runs until December 15. Each year the elementary schools and Journey participate in a Food Fight for our local Food Bank. Last year Sooke Elementary won (it’s based on a per capita count) and we are determined to take them out this year. Of course in the end it’s always the Food Bank that wins! Each day an item will be announced on the PA and each class has the chance to win extra food for their division. The Food Bank helps people right here in our wonderful community and all items are gratefully accepted. Items they are especially looking for this year are: baking goods (chocolate chips/raisons, flour, baking powder etc.); spices; granola bars and fruit cups; and jam/marmalade/honey.
